WWE 2K22 has been delayed until March 2022, as 2K Sports battles to get the wrestling series back on track. The annual series took a year off in 2020 after the disastrous WWE 2K20, and has now been delayed out of its traditional holiday slot. In a press release, the publisher said that the title has been “redefined from the ground up” and promised that it would “hit different”.
However, reports online suggest there’s a fractious relationship between 2K Sports and WWE right now. In an article published over the weekend, Sports Gamers Online claims that the two giants butted heads over the decision to delay the game, and the WWE has also threatened to work with alternative partners.
Regardless of whether that’s true or not, it’s clear from the outside that WWE 2K22’s route to market has been anything but smooth. The upshot is that additional development time should help developer Visual Concepts to avoid another WWE 2K20-esque fiasco, and hopefully when the game does arrive next year, it lives up to expectations.

It’ll be very very interesting when the AEW game comes out. WWE are in a precarious position even outside the games so we could see some actual competition for once.
@nessisonett I'd never even heard of AEW until like three days ago!
The THQ wrestling games will always be my favorite. Good times. After 2K20 I kinda just lost hope, but we will see. AEW game seems to be on the right track though.
Current wwe superstars don’t even take steroids it’s against the company’s wellness policy so you may want to change the article title.
@4kgk2 It's just a joke.
@get2sammyb Yeah, I’m not really up on all that either but they have CM Punk now so that’s a big draw.
@get2sammyb it’s a very cringy joke but ok😂.
The games are as uninspired as the WWE itself.
The rumour is that 2K wanted to delay because the game is extremely outdated in terms of roster, as WWE have been releasing top talent frequently for about 6 months.
Half the roster of this game is likely employed elsewhere and that will inevitably affect review scores cause reviewers can be stupid and won’t look past it. WWE won’t be affected in the slightest, they just want money in their pockets.
@Jacko11 I honestly feel like they’d be better off with a 90% legends roster in these games. You just end up with a million awful lower-card wrestlers and a handful of legends for a ridiculous amount of VC. MLB The Show probably has more legends than current players and it works for them.
I thought they don’t use spandex anymore
Well at least a WWE 2k game will actually come out on the year after which it's named.
Delaying the smackdown lol, that's a good one!
Say what you want, but this is the right approach to take. If your annual sports title is stuck together with bubblegum and fails to provide significant improvements with every iteration, you should simply skip a year or delay matters further to get your product to the level of quality it needs to be at.
In other news, Madden NFL 22 just released, while its predecessor isn't even a year old.
@4kgk2 Yeah considering how guys like Jinder Mahal, Bobby Lashley heck even Triple H still look. I very much doubt it.
I'm honestly more looking forward to the AEW game as that apparently is being made by the guys that made WWF No Mercy, regardless WWE needs stiff competition as that brings the best out of everyone like in the 90s with WCW.
@get2sammyb yeah that steroid joke comes off about as good as someone saying "wrestling is fake" nowadays. Steroids haven't been around in the WWE/F since the mid 90's. There will always be guys that try to circumvent the system but there's policies in place now.
I’m really loving the fact people feel the need to defend WWE against Slanderous Sammy™
@Jeevz You get that the WWE is very much fake? Does it still require athleticism? 100% Do those dudes get beat up? Absolutely. But pro wrasslin is still as much "real" as Keeping up with the Kardashians is a documentary series.
@GamesVanDerBeek this is a dumb comment.
@nessisonett tbh I completely agree, I guess its just the cost of getting those deals in place and licensing the likeness’s
Yikes. Who knew wrasslin' fans were such a touchy bunch....
Still the best one for me here comes the pain. And this game looks rough.
@GamesVanDerBeek Of course I do dude, I'm referring to the cringy "wrestling is fake" comments and jokes. It's like when people say "I'll just wait for the super hyper turbo champion edition of Street Fighter". It's lame and I don't like that kind of cynicism. It's too easy.
When they say "it hits different" I hope they mean better hit detection, because the old engine was definitely in need of a complete revamp. Focus less on the flashy intro and more on the actual gameplay
I didnt mind the spandex and steroids joke..i enjoyed the wwe shows as i just think its the most violent,over the top soap opera on t.v...always enjoyed the crowd cams so me and my friends could play spot the uncle daddys and sister mommys..ahhh happy days..
I will.just wait for AEW's game.
@Jeevz Waiting for the best edition isnt always a bad idea and no idea why you have a issue with that? If i see a fighting game that isnt released getting a seasonpass trailer then i will certainly wait. 🤪
@get2sammyb If you're a fan of wrestling I'd give it a go mate! Even my missus really enjoys it and she wasn't a fan of wrestling before.
On topic though, can't wait for this. I don't watch much WWE but I do love me any wrestling game I can get my hands on!
@Flaming_Kaiser Argh, I'm not talking about the act of waiting for a game to be complete or waiting for it to go on sale, I practice this exercise all the time. I'm talking about the cringy comments themselves. It's not funny. It's too easy.
Can I please just get a new All Stars with a decent create a wrestler? I've not been invested in pro wrestling for over a decade, but I love the games. I just wish they were more, I dunno, game-y.
In an ideal world, there'd be a base game which got the mechanics down right and the roster/skins/match types updated regularly for, I dunno, 3/5 years until a new game released.
